The Harmonagon™ is a web app that uses simple geometric shapes to teach music to anyone, anywhere, for free.

Don’t know where to begin? Try a Random Chord, Random Scale, or Tone Row.

Quick Start Guide

Audio: Before using the Harmonagon, please adjust the volume on your device.

Full Screen: A large display monitor and browser in full screen mode are recommended for optimum user experience. Choose Enter Full Screen from the View menu or use the keyboard shortcuts for Windows (F11) or Mac OS (Command + Control + F).

Making music is as easy as 1-2-3…

  1. Click or tap the Make Chord or Make Scale button on the center console.
  2. Click or tap to select one or more notes, from 0 through 11, on the circle.
  3. Click or tap the Enter button to see and hear the interval, chord, or scale you’ve created.

Tip: When making chords, limit the number of notes you select from 2 to 4, or for chords with tensions, 5 or more. When making scales, select from 5 to 7 notes, or more for longer scales. And always try to enclose the center of the Harmonagon within the shapes you create. When shapes do not encompass or at least intersect with the Harmonagon center point, the chord or scale produced will in most cases return “undefined.”

Show/Hide: Click or tap the center of the Harmonagon to display or hide the center button console.

Clear: Click or tap the Clear button to reset the Harmonagon to the default state.

Play: Click or tap the Play button to play any interval, chord, or scale that is displayed.

Loop: Click or tap the Loop button to play along or practice with intervals, arpeggios, chords, and scales. Click or tap the middle of the screen or press the spacebar to stop the loop.

Change Tempo: Select Tempo from the Change menu and choose from 30 to 240 beats per minute (bpm). The default is 120 bpm.

Add Chord: With one interval or chord created, click or tap the Add Chord button to create a second interval or chord.

Swap Chords: With two intervals or chords created, click or tap the Swap Chords button to switch between chords.

Loop Chords: With two intervals or chords created, click or tap the Loop Chords button to loop a sequence of the two chords. Click or tap the middle of the screen to cancel and stop playing the loop.

Merge: With two intervals or chords created, click or tap the Merge button to combine the chords into a matching scale. Click or tap Undo Merge to restore the two chords.

Learn: Choose any Chord, Scale, or Sequence from the Learn menu to instantly see and hear the selection presented and played on the Harmonagon.

Watch: Introduction to the Harmonagon 4-minute video.

IMPORTANT: The Harmonagon is updated frequently with new and improved features, so select Reload on the menu each time you visit to assure you are using the most current version.
